“When I lived in Oakland CA, I worked on a community project in Haiti. My mentor and teacher Laurel True, who is the founder of the Institute of Mosaic Arts, went to Haiti after the last horrible earthquake they had there to work with children making mosaics from the rubble. That lead her to work on a project with Mirebalais Hospital, a community hospital being built in Haiti, where she decorated the Pediatric Ward and the Children’s Playroom. She had children there draw pictures of what they wanted to see on the walls, then sent the drawings to mosaic artists to interpret into mosaics for the walls. I love that I have two mosaics there. I would like to bring together a mosaic community in Amarillo that would come together and work on community based projects locally and like the one in Haiti.”
